Volvo chief executive Hakan Samuelsson spoke with Top Gear this month to reveal the company's big plan: replace their entire lineup in the next four years. This means that we’ll be getting several brand-new models – or updates of models – all by 2019.
To start with, Samuelsson says that Volvo will be launching three new 90-series models, including the new XC90 SUV, as well as a V90 wagon and a S90 saloon. These new vehicles will replace the existing V70 and S80 models. The Volvo chief then moved on to the 60-series that will debut in 2017 and 2018. He said the new 60-series will include the XC60, the next-gen V60 and the S60. All three of the 60-series models will be based on the 90-series, but with a decrease in width and wheelbase.
Looking now at the new 40-series, Samuelsson said that in 2018 we can expect to see a new crossover SUV called the XC40. This new crossover will be followed by the S40 and the all-new V40 model that should hit the marketplace in 2019.
Basically, Volvo will be following what Samuelsson calls a “3x3 Strategy” that will have the automaker sticking to three distinct body styles and sizes for these nine new cars. This is an exciting plan that should streamline Volvo’s offerings and help customers find the best fit for their lifestyle.
