Over the years, Volvo has released several plug-in hybrid concepts and test projects, all of which have aided in the creation of the brand's new Scalable Platform Architecture. Volvo plans to integrate the new platform in most, if not all, of its vehicles sooner than later, including the V60, XC90, S60 and other U.S. models.

The modular system features electric rear-axle drive, optimized engine installation and a unique transmission tunnel that can house batteries, according to Dean Shaw, VP Corporate Communications at Volvo Cars of North America. Shaw also states that when the platform is integrated into the Volvo lineup, it will be possible to offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain on all models. While this certainly presents some interesting queries when it comes to things like pricing structure and range (especially for SUVs), it's exciting to know that one day we may sell PHEV versions of your favorite Swedish cars and crossovers.

The first vehicle to make the jump is the redesigned 2015 Volvo XC90, which will receive a plug-in hybrid powertrain option at the beginning of next year. Few details have been released about the new electrified model, but one thing is for sure: Volvo is plugging in to the future and you're all invited for the ride.
