Volvo is already known as one of the safest automakers on the market today. From their new accident prevention technology to their awesome standard safety features, drivers know they're safe in a Volvo. Its no surprise then that despite already leading the way in some of the best up-and-coming safety tech out there, Volvo's safety gurus are coming up with yet another terrific new innovation. This time for cyclists.

As most drivers know, sharing the road with cyclists can be a challenge, especially on tight city streets. To make the commute safer for both cyclists and drivers, Volvo has teamed up with tech companies POC and Ericsson to build a new bike helmet that will let cars and cyclists communicate with one another.

According to a press release from the automaker, the new technology will link together a Volvo with a specially made bike helmet using Connect Safety technology. The system works with Volvo's new City Safety system, which is currently standard on all new 2015 Volvo XC90 crossovers. The City Safety system works to detect and warn drivers of an impending collision with a cyclist. This new technology will tap into the City Safety system via popular smartphone apps that bicyclists use. The app will share the rider's position with the car through a head-up display alert, while the cyclist will be warned via an alert light.

This is the first technology of its kind and certainly a step in the right direction in terms of making the roads safer for both drivers and cyclists. As of now, the new safety tech is only in the prototype stages, but we'll keep you updated on when you can expect to see this fully realized tech come to Dallas.

For now, look for the all-new 2015 Volvo XC90 to arrive in Plano this spring!
