Check your tires. When driving a long distance, especially in hot weather, it's incredibly important to make sure your tires are in good condition. The last thing you want is to have a tire blowout when you're driving through the middle of nowhere, so check the tread and tire pressure before your trip.
Battery inspection. Dealing with a dead battery at home is one thing, but when you're out of town or in the midst of a long journey, it can be a huge burden. If it's been a while since you last had your vehicle's battery replaced, it's a must to have it inspected ahead of your trip.
