Apple, a company known for their iPods, iPads and Macs, recently announced that they are entering the automotive market with a new technology called CarPlay. The feature enables control of iPhones via a car's infotainment system, giving users the ability to email, text, make/receive calls and access Apple Maps through a vehicle's touch screen.

Volvo has already started working with the technology and states that it will incorporate a new CarPlay-compatible system in "coming generation Volvo cars," including future models like the completely redesigned 2015 Volvo XC90. Along with being able to hook up an iPhone, Volvo's interface will also allow drivers to control seat heating and climate control systems, as well as applications like Spotify, podcasts and audio books.

"iPhone users will feel completely at home in a new Volvo. We have created a wholly-integrated user experience in our large portrait-oriented touch screen that takes the in-car mobile device experience to a new level. That, coupled with the obvious driver safety benefits of an advanced voice control system like Siri, made Apple a perfect match for Volvo," said HÃ¥kan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars.

Thus far, CarPlay is only compatible with the iPhone 5, 5C and 5S, but Apple is working on adding functionality for other smartphones. Additionally, if a car does not have a touch screen, CarPlay still enables drivers to use voice commands to control their phones.
