1) Don’t speed. This is a big one. Not only does speeding waste a lot of gas, it’s also incredibly dangerous, especially when there is ice on the road. If you find yourself heading out on a stormy day when the roads will either be wet, icy or both, always remember to go at least 5 miles under the speed limit, so you get to your destination safely.
2) Don’t follow too closely. Another big no-no that is both dangerous and annoying, following to closely can cause major problems if the car in front of you suddenly loses control on a patch of ice, causing you to wreck right along with it.
3) Don’t brake sharply. When the roads are wet and icy, braking too hard can be very hazardous. That’s why experts agree that you should give yourself at least ten feet to make a stop on the freeway or on your local roadways.
4) Lean into a skid. Should you ever find yourself losing tire traction, or “fishtailing,” experts recommend steering into the direction of the skid until you regain traction. Try not to oversteer or let go of the wheel, simply lean into the direction your car wants to go and lightly tap your brakes. Once you’ve regain road traction, straighten your wheel and continue forward.
