One of Volvo’s biggest pushes is safety. It’s a huge part of the Volvo brand, as they steer toward their goal of no passenger deaths in their cars by 2020. But its not just car passengers that the automaker is looking after, Volvo now appears to be extending its safety net to cyclists through their new LifePaint spray.
Developed with Swedish company, Albedo100, LifePaint is used to provide a reflective coating to cyclists’ bikes, clothes and safety equipment. This reflective spray, which is invisible during the daytime, will light up when it comes in contact with a strong, direct source of light - specifically headlights.
According to the automaker, the spray is not actually what you’d commonly think of as paint. It washes off in about a week and can be applied to a number of fabrics and surfaces, including strollers, backpacks and dog leashes. The spray will officially kick off its debut in London, where it will be given away at six local bike shops. The plan is to then expand LifePaint’s production internationally after the first few months.
This is a terrific new safety gadget that is ingenious in its simplicity. It will be great to see what effect LifePaint has on the safety of cyclists and drivers going forward.
