Volvo’s newest powerplant is overtaking the competition in a big way. The new plug-in powertrain is said to get nearly 112 miles per gallon.
Debuting in Europe this fall, the automaker's new powertrain is first launching on the highly anticipated XC90 crossover. The XC90 is one of Volvo’s biggest debuts in years and this new plug-in version should take it to a whole new level. According to a Volvo press release, the new powertrain will consume only 2.1 liters of fuel every 62 miles, with the crossover being able to go over 27 miles on electric power alone.
"We have been working hard to earn our competitive edge and to give our customers the ultimate combination of performance and low fuel consumption. Our Twin Engine technology has enabled us to build on our heritage of efficient powertrain development in a completely new way," said Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.
And don’t think that this new eco-friendly engine loses anything on power. The powerplant gets 407 horsepower and even boasts all-wheel-drive capability. This amazing new system has become extremely popular with XC90 buyers around the world, with the plug-in already selling out through next year.
