Volvo is changing the face of the automotive world with a new phone-based app key that will streamline the way people access their cars. For ages, drivers have used physical keys to enter and start their vehicles, but Volvo’s new Bluetooth-enabled digital key instead relies on something that most people are more attached to these days: smartphones.

While keys will still be available, Volvo believes that many customers will enjoy the flexibility of being able to use their phones to enter their cars. As long as a compatible smartphone is in your hand, pocket, briefcase or purse, Volvo’s new tech enables key-free entry and ignition. Plus, drivers can share their digital keys with family members and friends, meaning there’s no need to transfer a physical key to let someone use your car. In addition, there’s the possibility of accessing ride sharing and rental car services with the new technology, and other possible implementations for the app key are also being researched.

"At Volvo we are not interested in technology for the sake of technology. New technology has to make our customers' lives easier and save them time. Mobility needs are evolving and so are our customers' expectation to access cars in an uncomplicated way," said Henrik Green, Vice President Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Cars.

Volvo plans to offer the digital key service on a limited selection of cars starting in 2017, possibly including the XC90 and all-new 2017 Volvo S90.
