In other parts of the world, Volvo isn't just known as a carmaker, but also as a developer of advanced child seats. Volvo was the first automaker in the industry to test child seats starting as far back as the 1960s, making the company a pioneer in child safety. Recently, Volvo proved its dedication to protecting youths once again with the introduction of three brand-new child seats that not only emphasize safety, but also comfort for children and convenience for adults who install them.

Offered in select areas across Europe, Volvo Cars' next generation of child seats use a new upholstery composed of 80 percent wool, which makes them more breathable, comfortable, durable and very smooth to the touch. The seats have also been given a svelte design that helps boost legroom while providing greater overall comfort.

They were developed with Britax-Römer, a leading child seat maker, and come in three different versions, including:

  • Infant rearward-facing seat for children up to 1 years old
  • Child rearward-facing seat for children 9 months to 6 years old
  • Booster forward-facing seat for children who've outgrown their rearward-facing seats

As far as whether Volvo will bring its child safety seats to the U.S., there have been some clues that this could be in the works, pending adherence to federal laws. Volvo's unique XC90 Excellence Child Safety Seat concept (pictured right) could be a preview of a future product; it enables parents to swivel the seat counter-clockwise in order to more easily place a child in the seat and lock it in a rearward facing position. The concept also includes convenient storage areas underneath and at the side of the seat.

If more information about a production model of the Excellence Child Seat Concept is revealed, you can be sure to find it on the Volvo of Dallas blog.
