Volvo recently held a groundbreaking ceremony in Berkeley County, South Carolina, where the company is building a new interchange to provide access to its first American factory. Work on the manufacturing facility is already underway, beginning back in September, and now construction on the interchange has commenced, as well. The new road will provide a convenient route to the plant, which is located roughly 30 miles northwest of Charleston.
The new road was part of an incentive package to attract Volvo to build its factory at the location. Along with contributing billions of dollars in economic output to the area, the factory will also create thousands of new jobs. In addition, it will produce up to 100,000 cars a year! In fact, the factory will be the global production site of the popular S60 sedan. When the facility is ready to start producing cars, around late 2018, new Volvo S60s will be built right here in the U.S. and then shipped to countries around the world.
In terms of environmental impact, Volvo has also been open about its commitment to creating an eco-friendly factory. The automaker is not only dedicated to abiding by environmental laws and regulations, but also plans to extend beyond what’s mandated by implementing a pollution prevention system and methods to conserve natural resources.
