Volvo has offered powerful and efficient hybrid options for several years, beginning with the 2013 V60 PHEV and evolving through the T8 powertrain on the S60, S90, XC60, XC90. In addition to improving fuel efficiency, the T8 engine generates an immense 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque and provides an all-electric range of 18-21 miles depending on vehicle weight. However, the Volvo XC40 was unfortunately excluded from the T8 powerplant. But that would turn out to be just fine, as Volvo chose its platform to launch the company's first-ever fully electric production model, the XC40 Recharge P8.

Prodigious Power, Zero Emissions

Instead of an electric motor/twincharged 2.0-liter combination, the XC40 Recharge equips an electric motor on each axle and a 75 kW battery pack. Altogether, the motors supply the standard AWD system with an astonishing 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque. While the battery pack makes the XC40 Recharge the heaviest model in the subcompact's lineup (4,840 pounds), it's still a few hundred pounds lighter than the XC60, and just 21 pounds heavier than the S90. The XC40 Recharge's smaller size and more robust powertrain give it excellent power-to-weight performance, and Volvo says it can sprint to 60 mph from a standstill in only 4.7 seconds.

Luxurious and Generously Equipped

At the time of this blog, Volvo has yet to release a comprehensive. That said, as the top model in the XC40's lineup, interested Plano shoppers can expect premium luxury accommodations and a wealth of amenities. Like all XC40's, the Recharge P8 will certainly include IntelliSafe advanced driver-assistance technologies, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, leather upholstery, automatic climate control, a power liftgate, and more.
