Get excited for the next phase of Volvo electrification with the announcement of their second electric vehicle (EV) to start production later this year. The new EV comes on the heels of the release of the Volvo XC40 Recharge, a small electric SUV with a range of just over 200-miles with its pure electric engine.

Volvo sets its sights on its aggressive goal of a 100-percent electric EV and hybrid line-up by 2025. They have been the most outspoken automaker about their plans for electrification and zero emissions. Sales over the past year have shown them that they should anticipate a sharp increase in demand for electric vehicles, and their response has been to revamp their Volvo XC40 plant in Belgium to accommodate even more production of their electric components. In Europe, sales of electric or hybrid vehicles made up 30-percent of their total sales last year, and they anticipate the bulk of their sales will be electric vehicles with hybrid or plug-in hybrids making up the rest over the next few years.

If the Volvo XC40 Recharge is any indication of what Volvo's electric technology is capable of, we have a lot to look forward to with their next option. Although they haven't announced the second EV's model, we know that it will be built from Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, which can accommodate midsize vehicles. The Volvo XC40 Recharge produces 402-horsepower and can go from 0-60-miles-per-hour in just 4.7 seconds. That's a lot of power on an electric engine and shows just how far Volvo has taken the technology for automobile electrification. Going electric no longer means sacrificing performance for efficiency and reduced emissions. Volvo's electric vehicles promise to change how we think about electric vehicles by creating a new generation of luxury electric vehicles that are truly fun to drive.
