Image: The Volvo For Life Fund Unveils New Initiatives for Coastal Health

Most people know Volvo for its cars, but the Swedish automaker supports philanthropic efforts as well. Recently, through the Volvo For Life Fund, the automaker launched several new initiatives designed to protect biodiversity in coastal areas and support local communities along the coast.

Volvo announced its new coastal protection efforts at the Ocean Race Summit in Spain late last year. The Volvo For Life Fund plans to partner with The Nature Conservancy to carry out its environmental protection efforts. Volvo is also partnering with the University of Gothenburg in Gothenburg, Sweden. Gothenburg is also where Volvo is located in Sweden. In collaboration with its partners, Volvo Cars aims to restore the health of coastlines and protect and preserve biodiversity in coastal regions around the world. Additionally, Volvo will support projects that help to protect coastal communities when natural disasters strike.

Although it will work with multiple partners to carry out its mission, Volvo Cars will have a slightly different focus with each partner. Working with The Nature Conservancy, Volvo aims to restore unprotected mangrove forests in the Indian Sundarbans, which contain some of the largest mangrove forests on the planet. These forests also provide habitats for threatened species like the Bengal tiger. The forests also help protect local communities from floods. Through this project, Volvo and The Nature Conservancy intend to improve the area's local ecosystem. The partnership will also engage the local community by providing jobs and empowering community members to protect the mangrove forests.

Working with the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, Volvo will help to restore eelgrass along the West Coast of Sweden. Eelgrass, as Volvo Cars notes, is a key species that helps protect coastal biodiversity. Volvo will specifically focus on planting eelgrass near its global headquarters. Along with restoring and promoting biodiversity in the area, Volvo adds that planting eelgrass along Sweden's coastline will also improve water quality for surrounding local communities.

What is the Volvo For Life Fund?

The Volvo For Life Fund supports and helps to carry out projects and missions that Volvo considers priorities. Specifically, Volvo For Life focuses on environmental efforts. By supporting the environment and protecting vulnerable ecosystems, Volvo For Life also aims to make communities more prepared for natural disasters and more resilient when natural disasters occur.
