Image: Volvo EX90 Adds Bi-Directional Home Charging

Swedish automaker Volvo is known for its exceptional vehicles and innovation. Now, Volvo proudly announces a new achievement, which is equipping the EX90 with a bi-directional charging system that allows customers to charge their vehicle and also use the vehicle’s battery as a source of power for their home when necessary.

What is Bi-Directional Charging?

While most EV chargers allow customers to charge their vehicles using power from a home, business, or charging station, Volvo is equipping the EX90 with a bi-directional charging cable that can send or deliver power between the vehicle and the customer’s home. Once the car’s battery is charged, the bi-directional charging cable can reverse the usual power flow from source to vehicle. If there is a power outage, customers can use power from their EX90 to provide power in their home. Along with delivering a supply of power on demand, the bi-directional charging system may help customers save money on their electric bills. Volvo is offering this new bi-directional charging system, which is the first one utilized by the company, on the Volvo EX90. The bi-directional charging cable will be available with the EX90 in select locations. Volvo created the new charging cable in conjunction with a company called dcbel®. The EX90’s bidirectional charging cable attaches to a wall-based unit, which is called the Ara Home Energy Station.

Bi-Directional Charging Benefits

Customers can enjoy a variety of benefits with the bi-directional charging system that the EX90 uses. On average, customers who use their Volvo to power their home when needed can save approximately $1,300 on annual utility bills. If the Volvo is fully charged when a power outage occurs, the EX90 can be used to provide power in the home for up to 2.5 days. The bi-directional charging cable also charges the EX90 quickly with a 400V charging capacity.
