Image: Volvo Cars Unveils A New Font Designed With Safety In Mind

Volvo makes some of the safest vehicles in the world, but they don't always draw attention to that fact. Models like the Volvo V60 and XC90 both grabbed 5-star overall ratings way back in 2018, and they've only continued to upgrade their driver-assist and physical safety features since then. Now the brand is taking things a step further with a new custom typeface created in the spirit of safety.

Meet Volvo Centum, a New Custom Typeface

Volvo calls their new Volvo Centum typeface a "quiet innovation in automotive design." Developed alongside Dalton Maag, a world-leading type studio, Volvo Centum was engineered to let Volvo's legacy of "safety, clarity, simplicity" stand out for itself. In addition to safety, the collaboration aimed to make the new bespoke typeface a source of calm for all Volvo drivers. Calmer drivers generally make for safer drivers, and we believe that those who spy the new font will instantly see the clarity in it.

Matthew Hall is the UX Creative Director at Volvo Cars and has nothing but great things to say about this new project. "Every detail in our interface is an opportunity to support safer driving. Typography is one of the most powerful, yet underappreciated, tools we have." The new typeface supports more than 800 languages and is designed for both apps and in-car interfaces in mind. Volvo even included complex, difficult-to-learn languages like Chinese and Korean in the mix. Wherever people drive Volvo vehicles, they can appreciate the simplicity of the new custom typeface.

Dalton Maag's Creative Director, Zeynep Akay, also took the time to speak out about the custom typeface, calling Volvo Centum a "typography engineered to perform under pressure, across languages, and at 100 km/h." You'll first be able to spot this elegant typeface in the Volvo EX60. For those wondering where the Centum name comes from, it's a nod to Volvo's 100 celebration bash that starts in 2027. 100 years of dominance is a long time for the world-famous automaker, and Dalton Maag helps to cement Volvo's legacy in stone by crafting a safe, clear, and inspiring typeface for the brand's in-car interface.
