Volvo All Wheel Drive Vs. Four Wheel Drive

When you're ready to buy a new car, you'll discover how many different features are available on the market with each model. Some cars that you test drive will have the option of AWD or 4WD, which you may be familiar with as a driver. It can be easy to think these setups are the same, but they're very different from one another. Although you may be confused with how they operate, there are a few facts to learn to ensure you know which option is the best choice for your needs. This will make it easier to select a system that allows you to feel more accommodated and safer on the road.

What is All-Wheel Drive?

When your vehicle comes with all-wheel drive, the powertrain is used to deliver power to the front and rear wheels on the car. This system is available as a full-time AWD option to ensure each of the four wheels constantly move. A part-time system is also available with a two-wheel drive mode, and it's capable of switching over to all-wheel drive at any time if you need more traction.

When you use the all-wheel drive system while sitting in the driver's seat, you don't have to perform any functions to engage the system. There are still a few models in the industry that offer options for control. Each wheel on the vehicle gets torque through a set of couplings, clutches, and differentials.

What is Four-Wheel Drive?

If you choose a four-wheel drive, you're likely planning on driving a pickup truck or SUV. This system also uses a set of differentials in the rear, center, and front with the use of couplings and transfer cases to ensure enough power is delivered to each wheel.

With 4WD, torque is sent to each wheel on the car when it's needed, with both full-time and part-time modes available to utilize. You have the option of choosing from low and high ranges while operating the vehicle. You can set this up through a lever or electronic switch, which are both easy to use. If you plan to drive on sand, snow, or gravel, opt for using the high setting. If you need as much traction as possible, the low setting will be useful.
