Volvo Testing Wireless Electric Car Charging Tech

Dedicated Volvo Cars posted a new press release today, stating that they are now testing wireless electric car charging tech in Sweden.

This process will not require wiring from your car to the charger. Instead, it will likely be an app-based system similar to what Tesla uses. While Tesla does use an app to locate its chargers, the system is still not wireless. You will still have wires from your car to the charger. The difference is that, in this case, your vehicle can communicate with the charger remotely, regardless of where it is.

This process could not only facilitate more efficient and cleaner charging due to fewer wires but also more convenient charging. The first use of a wireless connection was at a Norwegian airport back in 2009, allowing patrons to charge their phones with just about any outlet available. If Volvo were able to develop this technology, it would most likely be at a maximum speed of 12 kW. This would allow for a maximum of about 50 miles of range to the car. In comparison, Tesla's Superchargers can usually hit a full charge in less than 30 minutes.

This technology will most likely be used at commercially-available stations shortly. Because this is not just a test, several sites are already up and running. Even if Volvo was not involved in this process and a third party is instead developing it, there could be as many as 80 stations installed by 2024. These stations will allow for an Uber-like service as well, where you can hail a car to your location and give it a full charge while waiting. This may even allow startups and other small companies to have charging stations throughout cities and other popular areas.

This development could be the first of many to come for Volvo. It typically seems to be the first company to work on new and innovative technologies, such as the autonomous driving tech that has been developed for over a decade now without any real luck. The future of transportation is now even closer than ever, especially with Tesla's Supercharger network expanding worldwide. It seems only a time before wireless electric vehicle charging is more commonly accepted.

In conclusion, this wireless charging technology could lead to a more sustainable future. Volvo has been steadily making moves in the electric car market, and this development is just another step in the right direction. You can visit our dealership in Frisco, Texas for further inquiries.
