Volvo announced in December that they are partnering up with Northvolt in order to deliver a new R&D center and battery plant. This is an important part of an all-electric future. Volvo has previously announced that it will be all-electric by 2030. While the all-electric announcement has sounded promising, there is a lot of work that will go into making this a reality. The right partnerships will be necessary.

NorthVolt is experienced with building battery cells in a very sustainable manner. Research and development will take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, and a new manufacturing plant will be built in Europe for the endeavor. The location has not yet been determined, but it will begin operations in 2026. As many as 3,000 new jobs will be created. An annual capacity of 50 gigawatt-hours is expected. This is enough batteries for about half of a million vehicles annually.
It is expected that the research and development facility will be running next year, and at least a few hundred jobs will be created.
