There are a lot of reasons why your car might start making a strange sound. If you've noticed a sound like squeaking from the brakes or a clunking from under the hood, you'll want to pay attention. These sounds are signs that your car probably needs servicing. Below you'll find a list of common car sounds and what they mean.

Squeaky Brakes

Have you been noticing a squeaky sound when you step on the brakes? This sound means your brakes likely need servicing or repairs. Even if you take very good care of your car, the brakes naturally take a lot of wear and tear and will eventually need adjustments. Having a mechanic lubricate the parts, or replace worn-out brake pads or rotors, should take care of the squeaking problem.

Engine Rattling

A rattling sound is usually a sign of premature ignition in the engine. One of the most common causes of this is an overheated engine. It can also happen when the ignition timing is off, or if the fuel octane levels are not correct. These can cause premature ignition when they result in improper air and fuel mixture in the cylinder.

Engine Clicking

Is there a clicking sound coming from the engine? A clicking sound is a common symptom of low oil levels in your car. The easiest solution for this problem is to check the oil levels and, if necessary, take your vehicle in for an oil change. If these solutions don't stop the clicking, there may be a different problem. A clicking sound may also occur when engine valves are damaged or when there is too much valve lash.

Knocking From Under the Hood

A knocking from under the hood is never a good sign. Often, this kind of sound is a sign that one or more engine parts are not functioning correctly. Engine rods, pistons, and valves can all make a knocking sound when they are out of place, loose or worn out.

Engine Squealing

One of the most common reasons for a squealing sound in older vehicles is a problem with the accessory belt. If the accessory belt is too loose or is worn out, this will cause a squealing noise. The same is true in a newer vehicles when the serpentine belt is loose or worn.

Get excited for the next phase of Volvo electrification with the announcement of their second electric vehicle (EV) to start production later this year. The new EV comes on the heels of the release of the Volvo XC40 Recharge, a small electric SUV with a range of just over 200-miles with its pure electric engine.

Volvo sets its sights on its aggressive goal of a 100-percent electric EV and hybrid line-up by 2025. They have been the most outspoken automaker about their plans for electrification and zero emissions.
