What's New For the 2020 Volvo S90?

This well-equipped luxury sedan sees some significant changes for 2020. The base T5 engine has been dropped, and the new R-Design trim makes its debut. Leather upholstery and some new safety features are now standard across the trim lineup.

2020 S90 Trims & Features

The 2020 Volvo S90 is available in three trims. The base trim, known as the Momentum, comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a sunroof, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. Standard high-tech features include a 9-inch screen display, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, Volvo On Call remote access systems, navigation, and a lovely 10-speaker audio system.

The new R-Design trim is a bit sportier. It features some prominent exterior design accents and a few interior styling details. The Inscription trim comes with chrome exterior trim, upgraded leather upholstery, and a few more soft-touch surfaces on the interior. Both of these trims have four-zone climate control, luxury front seats that are bigger and wider, and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system.

Optional features that can be ordered as stand-alone add-ons include a head-up display, massaging front seats, heated rear seats, ventilated seats, and an air suspension system. The R-Design and Inscription trims can also be ordered with a premium Bowers & Wilkins stereo system.

Seat comfort is well above the average, and the windows are large enough to provide excellent outward visibility. The headroom is average for this class, but there's plenty of legroom in the rear seating area.

How Well does the 2020 Volvo S90 Perform?

2020 Volvo S90All three S90 trims come with the T6 powertrain as standard. The 2.0L engine is both supercharged and turbocharged. It produces 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The R-Design and Inscription trims can be purchased as a hybrid. The electric motor pairs with the standard engine for a total of 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque.

Handling and steering are exceptional. This sedan handles tight curves without noticeable body roll. The cabin is extremely quiet, thanks to the advanced sound-dampening technology. The supercharger kicks in at just the right time when rapid acceleration is required.

Technologies to Keep You Safe

2020 Volvo S90All of the desired safety features and driver-assist aids are standard on all three trims. These include Pilot Assist, a forward-collision warning system coupled with a distance maintaining system that detects the distance to the car ahead, the blind-spot information system that notifies the driver of vehicles approaching from the sides, and both low- and high-speed collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking. The Volvo S90 also comes with rear parking sensors. A 360-degree parking camera can be added as a stand-alone option.
