2020 Volvo XC90

What's New For the 2020 Volvo XC90?

Currently, in its second generation, the Volvo XC90 continues its trend of receiving yearly updates in 2020. Hardware and software changes highlight what's new in the latest version of the luxury SUV. Volvo has also implemented mild cosmetic upgrades and the option of choosing a six-passenger layout instead of the previously mandatory seven seats.

Which Trims & Features Are Available in 2020?

Available trims include the Momentum, a sporty R-Design, and the sophisticated, luxurious Inscription. The Momentum includes LED headlights with Volvo's signature Thor's Hammer daytime running lights. A high-gloss black front grille insert, bright chrome side window trim, and 18-inch alloy wheels accent the refined styling of the Momentum trim. Those who love minimalistic Scandinavian design will love the sleek, organized layout of the interior.

A premium audio system and high-quality materials complete the plush interior. The R-Design is a luxury SUV with a sporty edge. A striking appearance is created with side window surrounds, door mirror caps, and integrated tailpipes. Contoured seats are upholstered in Napa leather and provide comfort and style. Standard 20-inch alloy wheels with an exclusive diamond-cut finish leave a lasting impression. The Inscription model embodies the pinnacle of Swedish luxury. Chrome trim, a matte silver grille, and a body-colored rear bumper give the Inscription an elegant look.

A Perfect Blend of Power and Fuel Efficiency

The 2020 XC90 comes with three variations of its four-cylinder 2.0-liter gas engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base T5 engine is turbo-charged and generates 250-horsepower with 258 pound-feet of torque. An all-wheel drive T6 is available with 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

The XC90 may also come with the uniquely-tuned Drive-E T8 plug-in hybrid engine. The T8 produces 313 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and is augmented by a front-mounted 34-kW starter motor and generator. An 87-horsepower electric motor propels the rear axle. Total horsepower for the T8 is rated at 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque, which is quite generous for a mid-sized SUV.

Safety Features in the Forefront for 2020

Volvo has improved braking in the T8 hybrid model. A new hydraulic pump makes the transition between regenerative braking and friction braking much smoother. The Swedish automaker has also improved its adaptive cruise control system and added automatic braking support to the blind spot with a cross-traffic alert system. Front-impact, side-impact, and knee airbags are standard. The XC90 also includes anti-whiplash headrests, which react to minimize the driver's risk of developing whiplash in an accident.
