What's New For the 2021 Volvo XC40?

The first generation Volvo XC40, launched in 2019, gets a few changes for 2021. The most significant difference is the addition of the Recharge trim, and also the first all-electric SUV for Volvo. The XC40 Recharge is efficient, robust, and continues the Scandinavian stylish aesthetic of Volvo.

Which Trims & Features Are Available in 2021?

The 2021 XC40 has three other trim levels: the Momentum, which includes a 12-inch driver information display, an 8-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, automatic emergency braking, a power-adjustable driver's seat, keyless ignition, lane-keeping assistance, and a power-operated liftgate.

The R-Design trim adds to the first trim's standard offerings with faux leather seats, a panoramic moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless charging pad, and navigation. The Inscription trim adds more, including a crystal gearshift knob, leather seats, driftwood inlays. The optional Pilot Assist, available on all trims, includes adaptive cruise control, and a lane-centering function which can steer the vehicle without driver input.

2021 Volvo XC40 Interior

A Perfect Blend of Power and Fuel Efficiency

The Recharge offers a 78-kWh battery producing over 400 hp and 485 lb-ft of torque. This accelerates the Recharge from 0-60 in less than five seconds. XC40 Recharge's range is 220-240 miles and can charge up to 80% capacity in 40 minutes.

The other XC40 trims have one turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with two horsepower and drive configurations. The 187 hp, 221 lb-ft torque engine drives the front wheels, and the 248 hp version comes with all-wheel drive. Both engine configurations are linked to an 8-speed transmission. Fuel economy is 23 in city driving and 32 highway on the 187 hp engine, and 22 city, and 30 on the highway on the 248 hp engine.

The Volvo XC40 comes with an extensive list of standard safety features, including lane-keep assistance, City Safe Collision Avoidance, and automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring and vehicle steering technology, Pilot Assist is available in certain technology packages.
